- Summary
The most common dress in China for both men and women in the in the 19th and early 20th century was the samfu. 'Sam' refers to the upper garment which fastens with buttons over to the right and 'fu' refers to a pair of loose fitting trousers. Men eventually replaced the overlapping sam with a jacket. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw significant changes in the dress of both men and women.
