Details
Harry Young was born in Eaglehawk, near Bendigo in 1893. He left Australia for China in June 1900 on S.S. Eastern with his parents and siblings. Despite being born in Australia, his father, George Young, applied for exemption from the 1890 Chinese Act for the whole family and provided photographs of himself and his three sons, including Harry (described as Alex or Alexander).
Harry appears to have been incorrectly called 'Alex' or 'Alexander' in 1900 exemption paperwork or else his full name was 'Alexander Harry' or 'Harry Alexander'. There are no other references to 'Alex' or 'Alexander' in other historical sources but details about the two individuals match.
He returned to Australia around 1912 and then made a second trip to China in 1916. He was living in the family’s village described as 'Gar (or Yar) Yew', a village near Guangzhou, in January 1917. It is unknown whether he returned to Australia or remained in China.
