Details

Willie Young left Australia for China in June 1900 on S.S. Eastern with his parents and siblings. Despite being born in Australia, his father, George Young, applied for exemption from the 1890 Chinese Act for the whole family and provided photographs of himself and his three sons, including Willie. He returned to Victoria in November 1907 from Hong Kong on the S.S. Empire. At first he lived in Eaglehawk but by the time his sister Clara returned to Australia on 29 January 1917 he was living at Rutherglen. He was living two miles from the town at '8 mile' where he was working the tailings of the Great Southern Mine.
