Details
Processions, parades, displays and demonstrations have been an important part of street life in Australia. In Melbourne the first processions occurred in the late 1830s. Processions perform a range of functions from celebratory, commemorative to protest.
This activity is one shared by Chinese society. In China festivals were used to honour gods, ghosts and ancestors and involved food, dancing, fortune-telling, opera performances as well as processions. Chinese communities across Australia and elsewhere maintained these festivals, often reworked to fit more easily into their new environment. Chinese New Year and Ching Ming (Qing Ming) festivals were and still are widely celebrated.
In addition to being used to celebrate events important in the Chinese calendar they were quickly adopted and used in a broader Australian context, particularly as part of hospital fund raising events and royal visits. As early as 1867 the Chinese were involved in processions in Castlemaine and Ballarat to celebrate a British Royal Tour. In Bendigo and Ballarat Chinese processions were an annual event. In Bendigo they were held as part of the Bendigo Easter Fair which raised money for the Bendigo Base Hospital and Benevolent Asylum. So popular were these processions that in 1882 the Chinese organisers imposed a levy on all Chinese in the district so that banners and costumes could be purchased from China. Processions were also held in other parts of Australia.
These processions were spectacular events. The Chinese procession at the 1874 Beechworth Carnival was 200 strong, the procession as part of the Melbourne Hospital fund raising Bazaar in April 1900 contained 600 Chinese participants from around Victoria. This dwarfted the more well-known Federation procession held in Melbourne a little over a year later in May 1901 which had 300 participants.
The costumes and banners used were often shared by Chinese communities across Australia due to their expense. Costumes were borrowed from Bendigo and other Victorian towns for use in the Chinese procession in the Jubilee Charity Carnival in honour of Queen Victoria's Diamond Anniversary. Chinese opera costumes and props as well as ceremonial mandarin robes were also used.
