Sports and Agricultural Grounds, Sydney, New South Wales - Summary
The Diamond Jubilee charity carnival was held in honour of Queen Victoria's Diamond Anniversary at the Sydney Agricultural Grounds. An estimated 20,000 people attended. The Chinese procession played a prominent part in the displays. Costumes were brought from Bendigo and other Victorian towns. The 'sports' also included Chinese bands, bicycle races, athletics and dragon dance. Lord Hampden was the guest of honour and was greeted on arrival with an address by the Lin Yik Tong society, which was read by Quong Tart and translated for the Chinese audience by Sun Johnson. This event was well received by the whole community.
