Sylvia Chew worked as a teacher in Victoria. She was the eldest daughter of Godfrey Chew and Violet Sing. The family settled in Shepparton. Godfrey came from Canton in 1898. Violet was born in Maryborough, of a Chinese father and Irish-Welsh mother. She married Roy Lee Dow. Sylvia and Roy were the parents of Professor Kwong Lee Dow, recently Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne.
