Caleb Cheong was one of the sons of Cheok Hong Cheong and his wife Choy Ying Wong. He was born in Fitzroy, Melbourne in 1876 and died in 1943. He was educated at Scotch College (in Victoria Parade) and/or Melbourne Grammar School. He was a shareholder in the family company, Cheong & Co, but had a falling out with his father over a business venture which lasted till his father's death.
