According to J.G. Rogers, Ah Wy was a gardener who was arrested after stealing a cash box containing sixty-five pounds, an American dollar note and a quantity of scrip and trying to pass the dollar bill as a 'fiver'. At the Wood's Point Criminal Session he was sentenced to three years in Pentridge prison in October 1873.
