- Title
- Jane Elizabeth Tye was the Top End's leading midwife for nearly forty years until her death in 1934.
- Description
She inherited her skills from her mother, Sarah Bowman, an Englishwoman who studied midwifery in London. Janes's father was wealthy Chinese businessman Lee Hang Gong. Several women in Darwin in 1988 could still recall how 'Granny Tye' helped them during and after their pregnancies.
