- Published photograph. Fuller caption: 'A lazarette for Chinese lepers was set up in Clayton St. Ballarat East in the 1860s and continued for 20 years. Because of community fear of the disease, the Benevolent Asylum left food and clothing at the gate which was collected by an elderly one-legged compatriot who took it to the lepers. The photo is an early advertisement for Mr Hoyle's Pacific Vegetable Wonder. On the right is Sgt. Larner of the Ballarat East Police who in 1869 reported there were 1501 Chinese in Ballarat East including 550 miners, 266 shopkeepers, 150 gardeners, 120 carpenters, 250 gamblers and 100 theives.'
