Full caption: 'Among those whose sweat helped the rich get richer, the Chinese were particularly unfortunate. Their clannishness assured them of a hostile reception, so did their colour, their speech and the way they wore their hair. Most of all their capacity for hard work was bitterly resented. Survivors of the T'ai Ping massacres in China, these gentlemen face the disturbances on the goldfields at Weldborough, Tas. with equanimity, plus whatever background research the local newspapers can offer.
