    Handwritten caption: 'Shanghai 1886', 'chemists', 'Astor House Hotel', 'This view shows the first part of the American settlement. The enclosure to the right is part of the recreation ground, which is laid out with great artistic taste, has a pavillion in which the town band plays twice a week in warm weather at night under the electric light. The display of flowers of all sorts in the Summer months is really beautiful.'
