    Handwritten caption: 'Oriental Bank, Central Hotel (see roof), Sassoon [unclear] opium merchants. This view is taken from the end of the jetty [?] on [?] which the water carts are waiting to get filled from the river. The road or street actuall called Nankin Road, between Central Hotel and Sassoons runs right through the settlement of a city one mile in length. The dark looking patches on the left and right are the beautiful grass preserves which run all along the riverside.'
